The combat in Dragon Age: Veil Guard surprisingly stands out as the only redeemable feature amidst a sea of mediocrity. It’s dynamic, engaging, and feels well-polished, offering players a tactile experience that feels both strategic and gratifying. However, this alone isn’t enough to salvage the game’s other shortcomings.

The narrative depth and rich lore that Dragon Age fans have come to expect are noticeably absent here. The story feels like a generic fantasy plot, stripped of the dark, intricate world-building that defined its predecessors. It lacks the moral ambiguity and complexity that made the series compelling. If you’re looking for the dark, gritty fantasy atmosphere that Dragon Age is known for, Veil Guard will disappoint. The settings feel too bright and lack the eerie, oppressive tone of places like the Fade or the Deep Roads. It’s almost as if the game forgot its roots in dark fantasy.

Characters in Veil Guard are forgettable. There’s a stark lack of depth, development, and personal stories that made characters in previous games feel alive. The companions feel like they’re there just to fill slots rather than contribute to the story or gameplay in meaningful ways. Outside of combat, the game design feels uninspired. The world feels smaller, less interactive, and lacks the exploration element that fans love. There’s a noticeable absence of decision-making that had significant consequences, making the world feel static and less responsive to player actions.

This game barely feels like an entry in the Dragon Age series. The soul of what made Dragon Age special – its dark, intricate storytelling, the weight of player choices, and the unique blend of fantasy with political intrigue – is missing. It’s as if the developers forgot what made the franchise iconic. If we were to judge Veil Guard as a standalone title, not bound by the legacy of Dragon Age, it would rate a modest 5 out of 10. The combat system alone could carry it as a new, action-focused fantasy RPG, but it would still be weighed down by its lackluster narrative, character development, and world-building.

Dragon Age: Veil Guard is a game that might have found some success if it wasn’t trying to live up to the high expectations set by its predecessors. Fans of the series will likely feel let down, but newcomers looking for a game focused on combat mechanics might find some enjoyment here. However, for those who cherished the depth and darkness of Dragon Age, this installment feels like a missed opportunity to continue that legacy. Save your money and buy another title in my opinion but don’t let me tell you how to spend your money if you feel it is worth it buy it if not don’t feel pressured.
